Over 175 delegates from forty-one B.C. Locals assembled last week at the 2014 British Columbia Professional Fire Fighters’ Convention, held in Surrey, B.C., bestowed Mike Starchuk with an Honourary Membership to the British Columbia Professional Fire Fighters’ Association (BCPFFA). This honour is in recognition for his selfless work on behalf of his fellow fire fighters throughout the Province of British Columbia and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). Starchuk has worked tirelessly in assisting fire fighters with resolving work related injuries and in improving and maintaining their overall health and wellness. Surrey Fire Fighters’ Association President Mike McNamara stated, “Mike has been their anchor with his work and support of firefighters and their families, when they needed it most.”
Mike Starchuk began working with the Surrey Fire Service in May 1982 and currently holds the rank of Chief Fire Prevention Officer. He served on the Surrey Fire Fighters’ Association (SFFA) Executive and as a Director of the Charitable Society for 14 years. A past recipient of the SFFA’s most prestigious Peer Award (2009), Mike was awarded The Red Powell Award, “recognized as a fire fighters, fire fighter.” Mike is respected as a fire fighter and as a community activist. He has dedicated most of his career as a trainer for the department. He has organized many charity events long before our local was active as a charitable society. Variety Club, Canadian Blood Services and the Child Development Center have benefited from is dedication, to name a few. He has been an advocate on behalf of many members when they needed guidance or assistance. He helped pioneer our critical incident stress program and peer referral Members Family Assistance Program.
Mike is currently in his 32nd year of service and plans to retire later this year. Mike and his wife Sue live in Surrey and have two grown children.
