BREAK THE ICE
Hockey For Mental Health

October 13, 2023
Surrey Sport & Leisure Centre, 16555 Fraser Highway, Surrey, BC

Break the Ice Hockey Tournament is about raising funding and awareness towards Mental Health and Addiction initiatives. We want to create a new narrative, ‘new normal’ and remove the stigma attached with Mental Illness. Creating public awareness and promoting access to resources for citizens and/or first responders is the goal.

By collaborating with stakeholders in Surrey and BC, we want to help build the Road to Mental Health Readiness and have resources available to treat psychological trauma.  Together we can help reduce the suffering and tragic losses society and first responders sometimes face.

Please visit more about Dealing with Trauma

History on the Tournament

Since October 2011 the Snack Program Hockey Tournament  held at Fleetwood Sport and Leisure Centre has raised over $11,000.  This was a twelve team tournament including Surrey Fire teams, Surrey Engineering, Vancouver Fire, RCMP, and Langley Township. At the inaugural event, Director Ernie Dombrowski, President Chris Keon, and Acting Mayor Tom Gill dropped the ceremonial puck.

In 2015, we changed the focus to Mental Health Awareness, and will use the funding to support our Mental Health & Addiction charitable initiatives. We dedicate this tournament to brothers Ernie Dombrowski and Kevin Hegarty who lost their battle with mental illness earlier in 2015.
