How to become a Career Fire Fighter

Required Qualifications
- Legal entitlement to work in Canada.
- 19 years of age.
- High School graduation.
- Strong English language skills.
- Successful completion an IFSAC certified NFPA 1001 Level 2 program.
- First Responder Level 3 or Occupational First Aid Level 3 certification. As of January 1, 2013, a valid First Responder Level 3 License will be required.
- Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 3 with air, and a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour. More than 6 points in the last 3 years is considered excessive.
- No summary conviction for a criminal offence related to the job of a firefighter.
- A minimum 20/70 combined, uncorrected vision and 20/30 combined, corrected vision.
- Any medical condition that would render an individual’s vision unsafe for the position of firefighter or commercial driver will exclude the individual from the position, regardless of visual acuity score.
- Colour and peripheral vision safe for the position of firefighter.
- Normal, unaided hearing.
- You will be required to pass a medical examination, which includes minimum visual and hearing requirements. At some point, this test will also include mandatory drug testing.
All requirements must be supported by certificates or documents.

You will be required to:
- Pass a written exam.
- Pass a medical examination.
- Pass a physical fitness and performance assessment.
- Participate in an interview.
