Fire Fighter Awards


Each year our local membership recognize some of our members for their commitment and devotion to the betterment of the entire Surrey Fire Fighters Association.

2012 Recipients

  • Special Recognition Award – Adrian Neufeld, Mark Betts, Mark Bertoia, Brock Dorward, Tony Dyck, Ed Ma, Chris Keon
  • Meritorious Award – Theresa Snow
  • Committee Award – Jeff Judson, Brad Shirley
  • Silver Axe Award- Lorne West ‘re-named to the “Lorne West Silver Axe Award”

Local 1271 Award Criteria and Nomination Form

Special Recognition – A member who has demonstrated a significant contribution and effort to local 1271 and/or charity work in the last year or more.  These members made an impact on our membership and/or the community. Click this LINK to view past recipients.

Meritorious Award – Members who’s actions in the line of duty that go above and beyond regular duty. Above and beyond the call shall not be limited to acts of bravery. Any and all other actions deemed to be beyond the normal expectations of a member acting in the course of their regular duties when serving the public and that reflects positively in the public eye on the Surrey Fire Service shall be eligible for this award. Honorary Fire Fighter Status – An Honorary fire fighter is someone who has contributed to the goals and objectives of Local 1271 and shown the dedication and commitment required to be a fire fighter.  They will by virtue of the effort provided Local 1271 with a positive profile in the public’s eye, provided Local 1271 members a sense of pride and accomplishment. Committee Award – A member with a minimum 5 years service who has participated on numerous committees and has made a significant impact (a minimum of 3 UNION committees), contributing to the betterment of all Local 1271 members for an extended period of time (a majority of their five years service). Lorne West Silver Axe Award – A member with a minimum of 10 years service who has shown a dedicated and conscientious effort to uphold the standard of professionalism, reflects credit upon local 1271 on and off duty, and promotes goodwill among union brothers and sisters. They will have been contributing to the betterment of Local 1271 all members for a majority of their (ten years) service. Click this LINK to view past recipients.

Red Powell Award – The Fire Fighters, FIRE FIGHTER. The recipient of this award should exemplify that of a conscientious and dedicated fire fighter. On duty and off duty who upholds the standards of our profession, reflects credit upon local 1271 and promotes goodwill among union brothers and sisters. The Red Powell recipient should have been a member of Local 1271 for 20 years or more. They will have contributed to not only the betterment of all Local 1271 members but also the people in the community, which we serve.
