The 10th Annual Surrey Slamfest Wrestling tournament is February 14, 2013 at Guildford Park Secondary. The event was initiated in 2001 after Daniel Igali won Canada’s first ever Olympic Gold medal in Wrestling. It began with twelve students at one school and the program has now reached over 2,000 youth in Surrey’s schools. Slamfest Wrestling has expanded into an annual tournament as well as various wrestling camps and workshops for elementary students. The Slamfest program was developed as a ‘Stay in School Youth Program’ for at-risk students, and has made a positive difference in many lives. Former Slamfest bursary award winners Josh Beattie and Arminder Virk are now fire fighters with the Surrey Fire Service. They are continuing the tradition and spirit of what Slamfest was for them by giving back to the tournament and community as a whole.
“Wrestling saved my life. My greatest life memories are all rooted from my wrestling team.” Josh Beattie, age 20
